Tiles
Tiles
The name comes from the Arabic and it has become a tradition in Portugal. The tile has been produced nationally for 500 years and it is a unique case as a decorative and architectonic element. It has lined churches, palaces and changed the urban landscape.
The art of tilework must have created roots in the Iberian Peninsula owing to the influence of Arabs who brought to the conquered territories mosaics to decorate the walls of their palaces, lending them brilliance and pomposity through a complex geometrical interplay. The style fascinated the Spanish and the Portuguese. The craftsmen took the Moorish technique, which was age-old, simplified it and adapted the patterns to suit Western tastes.
